A Nutrition Guide for Dialysis Patients

21 September 20242 minute read

Dialysis is an important treatment method for people with kidney failure. In this process, proper nutrition is critical for patients to protect their health and improve their quality of life. In this article, we cover nutrition tips for dialysis patients and the points to pay attention to.

Dialysis and the Importance of Nutrition

While dialysis clears waste products from the body, it can also affect the levels of some nutrients in patients’ bodies. People on dialysis therefore need a special nutrition plan. Proper nutrition both increases the effectiveness of dialysis sessions and improves patients’ overall health.

  1. Protein Intake: Dialysis patients should get protein from high-quality sources (for example, chicken, fish, eggs and dairy products) to meet their protein needs. However, it is important not to overdo protein intake.

  2. Sodium Intake: Sodium can affect the body’s fluid balance. Dialysis patients are advised to limit their salt intake and avoid processed foods.

  3. Potassium and Phosphorus Control: Potassium and phosphorus levels need to be kept in balance. High-potassium foods such as bananas, potatoes and milk should be avoided, and consumption of high-phosphorus foods such as dried beans and lentils should also be limited.

  4. Fluid Intake: Dialysis patients should keep their fluid intake under control. This helps maintain the body’s fluid balance and prevents fluid overload during dialysis sessions.

  • Fresh Vegetables: Vegetables such as spinach and broccoli are rich in vitamins and minerals. However, it is best to avoid vegetables that are high in potassium.
  • Whole Grains: Whole grains such as bulgur and brown rice support digestive health thanks to their fiber content.
  • Healthy Fats: Healthy fats such as olive oil are recommended to protect heart health.
